Chapter 23: Full-Length Reading Tests

Structure:

  • 3–4 passages per test (Academic or General Training)

  • 40 questions per test

  • Variety of question types: MCQs, True/False/Not Given, Matching Headings, Diagram/Label Completion, Sentence/Table Completion

How to Use:

  1. Set a 60-minute timer.

  2. Apply skimming and scanning first, then answer questions.

  3. Review your answers and read the explanations carefully.

Mini Practice Example (from Test 1):

Passage Excerpt:
“Global warming has led to increased storm activity and rising sea levels. Coastal cities are particularly vulnerable, and governments are investing in flood defenses.”

Question: Coastal cities are not affected by global warming.

  • Answer: False (passage says “particularly vulnerable”)

Question: Governments are building flood defenses.

  • Answer: True

Chapter 24: Detailed Answer Explanations

Purpose: Understanding why an answer is correct or incorrect is as important as answering the question.

Example Explanation:
Question: “Renewable energy is always cheap.”

  • Passage: “Though initially costly, renewable energy has proven economically viable in the long term.”

  • Error: “Always cheap” is extreme; passage specifies initial costs, not permanent.

Tip: After each practice test, review your mistakes and patterns, not just the correct answers.

Chapter 25: Timed Test Drills

Purpose: Build speed and stamina.

Drills:

  1. 10-minute paragraph scan → answer 3–4 questions.

  2. Synonym recognition drill → find paraphrases in under 2 minutes per sentence.

  3. Full practice test → 60 minutes, simulate exam conditions.

Mini Exercise:
Passage: “E-learning platforms have expanded dramatically, especially during global lockdowns.”
Question: Online learning has decreased during lockdowns.

  • Answer: False
