Chapter 15: Full Passage Walkthrough

Example Passage:
“Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power are becoming increasingly important. Governments worldwide are investing in these technologies, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and combat climate change.”

Step-by-Step:

  1. Read the title and first sentence → topic = renewable energy.

  2. Look at questions → e.g., “Governments are ignoring renewable energy.”

  3. Scan the passage → “Governments… investing… reduce reliance”

  4. Compare → contradicts the question → Answer: False

Chapter 16: Speed-Building Drills

Drills:

  1. 1-Minute Scan Drill: Pick a paragraph and find all dates, names, and numbers in 60 seconds.

  2. Keyword Hunt Drill: Take 5 questions and scan for keywords only.

  3. Paraphrase Recognition Drill: Identify synonyms in 10 sentences from a passage.

Mini Exercise:
Scan the passage: “The Great Fire of London occurred in 1666, destroying thousands of homes.”
Question: What year did the Great Fire happen?

  • Answer: 1666

Chapter 17: Error Analysis

Purpose: Learn from mistakes rather than just checking answers.

Strategy:

  1. For every wrong answer, ask: Did I miss a keyword? Misunderstand paraphrase? Ignore word limits?

  2. Re-read the relevant part of the passage.

  3. Record patterns of mistakes and practice similar questions.

Mini Exercise:
If you answered True instead of Not Given for:
“Vaccination prevents all diseases”

  • Error → “all diseases” exaggerates; passage only says “many deaths prevented.”

Chapter 13: Matching Features / Information

Purpose: Connect details to people, places, or events.

Strategy:

  1. Identify the categories in the question.

  2. Scan the passage for keywords or synonyms.

  3. Check each option carefully to avoid traps.

Mini Exercise:
Passage: “Dr. Smith invented the first electric car in 1885, while Dr. Brown developed a solar-powered vehicle in 1890.”
Question: Match the inventors to their inventions.

  • Dr. Smith → Electric car

  • Dr. Brown → Solar-powered vehicle
